MM Studio is led by architect Mel Middleton, whose career spans more than three decades of thoughtful residential design.
MM Studio is a residential architecture practice led by Mel Middleton, offering the depth of a seasoned architect with the attentiveness of a boutique studio. Mel holds degrees in architectural design from Clemson University and University of Hawaii at Manoa, is NCARB certified, and holds architectural licenses in multiple states.
With over 30 years of experience—primarily in custom residential design, along with select faith-based and boutique commercial projects—Mel has built a career grounded in thoughtful design and genuine relationships. She has worked with award-winning architecture firms in Florida, Hawaii, and South Carolina, gaining a deep appreciation for regional character, climate, and the way place shapes how we live.
For more than two decades, Mel was also a military spouse, moving often and learning how to quickly understand new communities and lifestyles. Those years shaped the way she practices architecture today—by listening closely, responding thoughtfully, and designing homes that feel grounded and personal, no matter the location. After her husband’s retirement from the U.S. Marine Corps, their family returned to Greenville in 2013.

Once back in Greenville, Mel spent several years with a large, established firm focused on faith-based design, working on projects of meaningful scale and complexity. She later joined a smaller, award-winning residential practice devoted exclusively to custom homes, where she led the design of numerous high-end residences—many of which received design recognition. That experience refined her approach to residential architecture and reinforced her belief that great homes are equal parts planning, detail, and trust.
As both a licensed architect and lifelong artist, Mel brings a trained eye and a deeply personal perspective to every project. She believes the most successful homes are not just well designed, but well understood—shaped by the way families live, gather, and evolve over time. Her process is collaborative, measured, and intentional, with an emphasis on clarity and care from the very first conversation.
